The Savannas Recreation Area provides a look at fresh water marshes and an
opportunity for good fishing, while Barley Barber Swamp, a protected hammock
in western Martin County, opens a world of nature to visitors taking one of
Florida Power & Light Co.'s popular tours.
state-operated and historic Jonathan Dickinson State Park allows visitors a
leisurely river cruise along the wild and scenic Loxahatchee River where
alligators come right up to the boat, or a chance to paddle your own canoe.
There's camping, hiking and fishing available on 10,328 acres.
to Jonathan Dickinson Park is the Hobe Sound Nature Center and Wildlife Refuge
where visitors can take walking tours of the area and learn about the flora and
fauna that exist in this preserve. At the northern end of Jupiter Island, the
state operates St. Lucie Inlet State Park, where boaters can come ashore onto a
deserted peninsula beach away from the crowds of busy Martin County.
scenic cruise in your own craft is down the St. Lucie Canal to the St. Lucie
Locks operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Just like the Panama Canal,
boats are lifted from one side of the locks to the other as they use the St.
Lucie Canal for cross-state transportation to the Gulf of Mexico through Lake
Okeechobee. A popular stopping- off spot is the Indiantown Marina.
Local causeways are perfect spots for swimming, windsurfing, jet-skiing and picnicking. Once a year, the Sertoma Club sponsors hydroplane races, which take over the waters of the Indian River and the Stuart Causeway Park in offering some of the finest racing nationwide. The hydroplanes have been coming to Stuart for more than 30 years.
